In the middle of the 19th century, Miss Violet Watkin founded a dame school for any local interested in learning. Determined to better the education of all, funded by a moderately wealthy nephew and possessed with a packrat's determination to save everything, she unknowingly laid the foundation for our Museum and Learning Center. As tribute to her, the "Wandering Scholars" exhibit is a permanent feature of the library and resides in the original home of her dame school.
On this our 50th anniversary, we are featuring scholars from her home country, the Independant State of Caledon. She met only a few personally but letters discovered in her nephew's estate attest to her keen interest in their efforts. Unfortunately, her passion for sharing knowledge on any subject did not extend to herself, for we know almost nothing of her life.
